Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new things — text, images, music, code, and more — based on instructions you give it. Tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Gemini are examples. When a child types "write me a story about a Nigerian girl who discovers a time machine" into an AI tool and gets a story back — that is generative AI at work.

But here is what most people miss: the quality of what AI produces depends entirely on the quality of the instructions you give it. This skill — called prompt engineering — is one of the most valuable new literacies of the 21st century, and children can absolutely learn it.
